ASHE Update

ASHE Region 7 Advisory Board Member Michael Hatton (“Mike”) will provide attendees with an overview of ASHE’s organization, mission, strategic plan, and reintroduce the group to key initiatives going on within ASHE and at other Region 7 Chapters.  In addition, Mike will discuss some of his recent success with construction and renovation projects, Joint Commission Surveys (finally over for a cycle!), and with their ongoing focus on Benchmarking, Energy Management and the ASHE Energy to Care and Energy Star programs.  A healthcare facility manager for 30+ years, Mike will present some of his ‘lessons learned’ about our industry, successes, failures, as well as current concerns such as staffing, the ‘graying’ of our industry, and the future of healthcare facilities management.

Speaker:  Michael Hatton, MBA, CHRM, RPA, SMA, FASHE ASHE Region 7 Board Member

Michael Hatton, Vice President, manages “facilities”, construction, and various other
support teams from a corporate level for Memorial Hermann in Houston, Texas.
In the previous 36 months, Mike has delivered 6 major hospital expansions and
Greenfield projects in the Houston suburbs with a total capital cost approaching $1.2 billion and
is currently tasked with delivering over $1.37 billion in active capital projects across the Houston
region. Mike’s ‘day job’ and core competency, and first love, has always been buildings; their
MEP systems, operations, equipment – proactively maintaining them at optimal energy
efficiency, reliability, and survey/code readiness.

Under his leadership, Memorial Hermann has driven over $140 million to the bottom line
as a direct result of energy benchmarking and building tuning efforts both internally, via ASHE’s
Energy to Care initiatives, and externally, via EPA’s Energy Star program. Memorial Hermann
and its facilities have been awarded ASHE’s Energy to Care award numerous times from the onset
of the program (2011), and in addition, Memorial Hermann has been recognized as an ‘Energy
Star Partner of the Year’ in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021…

Memorial Hermann currently has 10 Energy Star labeled (EPA) hospitals; 2 of which are
currently ranked at an Energy Star 100 rating, 7 others above the 90th percentile!

Even more important, Mike is very active in our industry focusing on hospital Facilities infrastructure and energy management improvements via ASHE and other industry trade groups.Memorial Hermann grows their own healthcare facility managers/leaders and is proud of their current focus on the next generation of healthcare facility professionals with their 2021 Summer Intern program. Currently, Mike is ASHE’s Region 7 Advisory Board Member for Texas and its 4 surrounding states.
